Involvement is valuable for commitment, however, when we scale this to larger numbers of people, the coordination overhead begins to overwhelm the decision-making process.
So how might we effectively scale involvement-based commitment?
Decision Rules. I don't need to be present at the point of making the decision if I believe that my interests would be represented and I would have come to the same conclusion if I was actually there. This requires me to trust and commit to the way that the decision was made. So most importantly I must be involved in the creation and modification of decision rules that guide decision-making. If I'm involved and committed in the decision rules, it's not as necessary for me to be involved in all the decisions.
Partitioning. I only need to be committed (and therefore involved) in decisions that require my participation to execute and/or have consequences that will affect me significantly. I can and should safely ignore all other decisions.
Any other ideas?
