Sometimes you need to focus on mastery before autonomy

When a team has been losing for a while, unsuprisingly there's a tendency for the team members to see themselves as losers.  In this type of situation, they're not looking for more autonomy, for more opportunities for self-direction and self-organisation; they're looking for a win.

If you want to help, then first help them manufacture some kind of success, help them restore some sense of optimism... and only then might the priority shift to supporting the development of their autonomy.
